FUCK CANCER, HELP MY MAN JUSTIN.

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Cancer is fucking everywhere, I’m sure all of you either know somebody that has/had it, or even worse… have lost a loved one to it. -When i was visiting family over Thanksgiving, I met a really cool young writer who’s father has brain cancer. My father had a close friend pass to lung cancer last month, another close friend of mine’s Mother is currently battling breast cancer…. even my former love was terminally diagnosed with cancer when she was only 8… after 9 months of chemotherapy she miraculously beat it! -Now i just found out my Friend Justin Van Hoy  http://www.thedutchpress.com  -is battling Cancer for the SECOND TIME! -He won the battle the first round, but the doctors informed Justin that he had a 30% chance of a relapse… unfortunately 30% has happened and now Justin only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant. Justin’s family is not a match for him so now he is forced to search for a possible donor…

-if you are a absolutely amazing-beautiful person and want to save a life, or maybe you are a complete piece of shit and seriously need to clear up your karma overdraft charges here is your chance… its REALLY easy…

To get tested is really simple and only requires a mouth swab or a very quick blood test.
Some of my information you will need:

• Name: Justin B. Van Hoy ( Please tell whomever you are dealing with that his name is Van Hoy and not Vanhoy. The spelling is important, so make sure they put a space in between Van and Hoy )

Justin will be doing the transplant at City of Hope ( http://www.cityofhope.org ), which is just east of Pasadena. It is a really amazing cancer center and highly regarded, so its really great they are only about 10 miles from his house. If you are in the greater LA area, you can go directly to City of Hope to donate blood and get tested at the same time. There is a $50 fee for processing the marrow sample, but if you donate blood too, then the cost is waived. If anyone finds it hard to spend the $50 ( I know times are tough right now, so  let him know and he will reimburse you himself.) If you have any questions and are planning on going to City of Hope, you can call 626-301-8483. It works best to make an appointment if you are going up there.
If you aren’t in the LA area, here are some links for registering with the National Bone Marrow Registry, the entire registry is a worldwide network and is also linked in with the Red Cross, so there are lots of places to go if you aren’t in the LA area. Here are links to figure out where the closest is for you:
Justin hates asking anyone to have to do this, and he wouldnt be doing it  unless it was really important. Let him know if you have ANY questions at all and he will get them answered for you. You can also email Justin’s wife with questions.. holly603@gmail.com   Please feel free to send this message along to anyone, he REALLY needs as much help as he can get. Post it on your blogs or dump it in your email blasts, etc.
-THANK YOU, GOD BLESS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS…

*** JUST UPDATED***

Friends of Justin…

Most of you received a email from Justin yesterday and TO MAKE THIS REALLY EASY FOR EVERYONE to help…

In conjunction with City of Hope, we are hosting a bone marrow drive for Justin at our office next TUESDAY JANUARY 6th, 2009

It will take place between 10am and 2pm…
(So go to work late or come on your lunch break!)

Taking place at the R. Rock Office:
3111 Los Feliz Blvd. Suite 100
LA, CA 90039

O: 323-669-8819

There is NO COST but DONATION of any amount is requested…

They will be doing mouth swabs, no blood! So easy…right? There will be a consent form you need to fill out prior to getting swabbed. The process shouldn’t take long but we’ll have some snacks and drinks if you need to wait. This is open for ANYONE that wants to help out, so SPREAD the word!

Please be aware that by getting tested for Justin, you will be added to the national bone marrow donor registry. When a volunteer registers as a potential donor, his/her tissue type is listed on the donor file and is compared with the tissue type of all patients in need of a transplant. You can withdraw at any time, but keep in mind that you may be someone’s only hope for survival.

Please drop us a line to let us know if you are coming so that we can gauge the number of materials needed. For more information about Justin or the drive, email or call us. See you TUESDAY!

Thanks,
Sonja

HIPGNOSIS INTERVIEW….

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Hipgnosis is a UK design team from the early 70’s that did all of your(at least my favorite!) favorite album covers… Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Peter Gabriel… you name it. Some of the most powerful and impactful memories i remember from my early youth, were not only the awesome music my father would play for me, but the album covers of those records… most of which were created by these guys.

-check out their book; “For the love of vinyl; the album art of Hipgnosis”

-and the interview… the bit about how the cover for “Houses of the holy” is a great fucking story.

Defaced graffiti-styled mural restored
by Doug MacCash, The Times-Picayune
Monday October 27, 2008, 10:22 PM

As anti-graffiti activist Fred Radtke awaits his day in court on charges of obliterating a Bywater artists’ mural painted on a cinderblock wall, the artists showed up this weekend and, once again with the wall owner’s permission, began a new mural that they completed Monday.

ELIOT KAMENITZ / THE TIMES PICAYUNE
The mural on the cinder block wall of Southern Coating and Waterproofing has been restored after it was painted partially over with gray paint. Monday, October 27, 2008.
The new design celebrates the Day of the Dead, with cartoon skulls, New Orleans-style tombs and interlocking graffiti-style lettering. As three artists applied wisps of spray paint to the wall Sunday afternoon, one of them, Clayton Nepveux, called special attention to the scales of justice in the upper right corner of the wall, near the corner of Press and Burgundy streets.

After the incident last week, the scales may be tipping in the direction of street art.

On Wednesday, Radtke, New Orleans’ most celebrated and scorned anti-graffiti activist, was in the process of rolling gray enamel over a newly finished painting when he was brought up short by a pair of National Guard Military Police officers. Though Radtke, known as the gray ghost, has long enjoyed the cooperation of the New Orleans Police Department, this time he had defaced art that was painted with the permission of the wall’s owner, Southern Coating and Waterproofing.

The mural was by most standards a well-composed and laboriously applied work of art, not a run-of-the-mill, hastily applied graffiti tag. But Radtke and his organization, Operation: Clean Sweep, apparently disagreed.

Radtke, however, had neglected to secure permission of the owners to blot out the mural, even though company representatives were in the building’s office when Radtke arrived.

Radtke was released soon after his arrest Wednesday. He was later issued a summons to appear in court on charges of criminal damage to property. If convicted, he could be fined up to $500 and/or spend up to 90 days in jail, plus pay restitution.

Radtke did not return a call seeking comment.

The three painters, Nepveux, 25; Jay Matthews, 33; and Gabriel (who declined to provide his last name), 28, paused in their work Sunday to discuss the never-ending New Orleans graffiti controversy. Though all three artists approve of some graffiti writing, they said they do not make a practice of illegally tagging themselves.

“We’re not just knucklehead kids running around, ” Matthews said.

Gabriel said he and others have repainted the Southern Coating and Waterproofing wall several times since 1999, suffering regular anti-graffiti blottings.

But graffiti writing, they pointed out, isn’t the issue here. By Nepveux’s definition, “graffiti is illicitly painting a surface in a public space.” It follows that where there’s permission, there is no graffiti.

At least one police car passed by Monday without pausing as the three artists donned air filter masks and returned to work.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
