BANKSY SPEAKS ON MR. BRAINWASHED
-Banksy: Thierry’s entertainment potential wasn’t difficult to spot – he actually walks into doors and falls down stairs. It was like hanging out with Groucho Marx but with funnier facial hair. Thierry arrived at a point when my world was becoming infested with hipsters and heavy irony, so his exuberant man-child innocence was fun to be around. Maybe I convinced myself Thierry was a good subject just because I liked him. I’d be lying if I told you the first time I met him I thought ‘this man’s life will deliver a good narrative arc’.

TYKE(WITNES) AWR SAN DIEGO 97′
One of the main reasons i do this stupid blog is to promote/support the people i respect or admire that may or may not get the attention or credit that i think they deserve…
TYKE(now known as WITNES) is definitely one such person… Him along with KRUSH are stylistically speaking probably my 2 biggest personal influences. The first time i painted with TYKE it was on a wall under the 5 with BLES, EWOK, KEPT and JUST195. All of us had already started painting and were well into our pieces(about 60%) when TYKE finally showed up… I had already been a huge admirer of his work but was in no way prepared for what i was about to Witness… This guy showed up and shattered every idea i had about how it is you are supposed to go about painting a piece. Painting in a crazy neurotic frenzy holding 2 cans in each hand i watched this guy paint his entire “T” first from sketch to the final highlights, background, border -everything… All before skipping the middle 2 letters and painting his last the “E” next doing the same thing. He worked in a complete unorthodox style, making a mess with black then cutting into it working dark to light with color; almost sculpting his organic letter forms.. At that time this approach to painting was unheard of(graffiti speaking) and i totally stopped and stood watching TYKE paint for a solid half hour.
-That day was a revelation for me as i learned more in that one session than i likely had in the previous 5 years about technique. TYKE ended up finishing his piece, and painting 2 characters on either side before everybody else… About 2 hours total. He left while the rest of us were finishing up our highlights.
REALLY wish i had a better photo.
